Leadership and Jefferson Awards

The Jefferson Awards (J.A.), founded by Senator Robert Taft, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and Sam Beard, is a national program whose mission is to create a “Nobel Prize” for community service. J.A. currently awards exceptional volunteerism on the national level, and has now integrated their program into select high schools. We at Lake Brantley recognize and promote outstanding volunteerism to our students. For the last two years Lake Brantley has been the most effective J.A. program to promote and recognize awareness in Central Florida. NBA and NFL players, as well as many other athlete leagues and high standing citizens, have been awarded. Awarded students are recognized and promoted throughout the school and community.

The Jefferson Award winner for May is Cory Marcous!

Corey Marcous was awarded the Jefferson Award for the month of May. This month he has been awarded for his outstanding work at Annunciations Catholic Camp. Corey worked well by being an example for all of the children there at the camp, he worked exceptionally well with the autistic children. Corey feels that if kids his age see him volunteering then he will serve as an example for others to inspire them to work on their own community service projects and helping the community at large.

The Lake Brantley Jefferson Awards Committee donated $50 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure.

The Feburary Jefferson Award Winner is Molly Leavitt!

Molly volunteers at the Jewish Community Center (JCC) as a counselor. She helps allow campers to go to camp on a scholarship. Molly worked around 250 hours over the summer helping campers put on musicals. During the school year, she continues her volunteer work at the JCC. Twice a week she helps children with plays, for around another 100 hours of volunteering. She has a total of 350 hours as a counselor helping children attain self confidence through preforming and serve as a positive role model. The Jewish community Center pays for several scholarship campers every year. As a volunteer counselor Molly helped to save the JCC enough money to send children to camp on scholarship. This allowed them to have a safe, and fun summer, which otherwise, they would not have had.

The Lake Brantley Jefferson Awards Committee has donated $50 to the Jewish Community Center of Greater Orlando on behalf of Molly Leavitt. Thank you Molly for volunteering your time!

October’s Jefferson Award winners are: Nathaniel & Samuel Landrum

Nate and Samuel volunteered this past summer serving homeless and ill veterans at their local VA hospital. They said that their service at the hospital was their way of thanking veterans who have served.

Nate said: He has worked with many wounded veterans in the ambulatory surgery room. He has helped doctors and nurses prepare patients in pre-surgery and post surgery. Being able to serve our veterans is what made the work so rewarded for Nate. Nate explains some soldiers just need someone to sit and listen to them. He says that he enjoys hearing their stories and being able to shake their hands and thank them for their service. It is his job to comfort them whether they need a warm blanket after surgery or an encouraging word before. He reminds them that they have not been forgotten.

Samuel says: The doctors and nursing staff have a heavy burden caring for the many veterans in the ambulatory services department of the VA hospital. Samuel explains it is his job to lighten the load by preparing the pre-op stations where veterans will wait in prior to surgery and then transport them to their families once their procedures are complete. Many veterans are nervous and he says he tries to befriend them and meet their needs during their stay. He also serves the area’s homeless veteran population through events like Veterans Stand Down. He serves as a “Battle Buddy” to homeless men and women who come seeking medical attention, food, and clothing. He wants them to know that their service is appreciated and that they are not forgotten.

Nate and Samuel hope that their service is a blessing to the veterans and an encouragement to other students to remember those who have served us. Every soldier makes a sacrifice in order to serve their country. Serving at the VA Hospital is their way to give back and thank those who have sacrificed to keep citizens safe.

The Lake Brantley Jefferson Awards Committee donated $50 to The Veterans Support Organization in Orlando-(Veterans Stand Down) for Nate’s cause; And $50 to Wounded Warrior Project to Samuel’s cause. Combined the Landrum brothers had a total of 195 hours of service to the Veterans.

The September Jefferson Awards Winner was Hannah Bosgraaf:

Hannah Bosgraaf was awarded the Jefferson Award due to her outstanding community service this past summer. She went on a mission trip to an orphanage in Ukraine for two weeks and spent time with the children. After returning home from her trip Bosgraaf and her Mother Michelle were so touched by the experience that they decided to start a non profit organization called Far Away Place. Their organization’s goal is to provide a house for the teen orphans, who are kicked out of the orphanage at the age of sixteen. These teens often end up on the street and get involved with various drugs, criminal actions, prostitution, and by their eighteenth birthday 10% of those teens will have already committed suicide. The house they are working towards will provide food, clothing, knowledge about God, English lessons, and guidance for getting jobs. When Bosgraaf returned to Brantley this school year she started Far Away Place as a club, with Mr. Keyes (Advanced Placement Environmental teacher) as her sponsor.

The Jefferson Awards Committee awarded $50 to Bosgraafs LB club/ non profit organization Far Away Place.
