Attendance Policy 2017-18

Please review the following policies carefully, as some policies may have changed from prior years.  Please contact your student’s administrator if you have any questions or concerns.

Absentee Policy:

·         A student under the age of 16 is required by state law to attend school. Additionally, a student may have his/her driver’s license revoked due to excessive absences. All doctor notes or other official documentation must be turned in within 5 days of the absence. NO PARENT NOTES ARE CONSIDERED AS EXCUSED ABSENCE.

  • A student with more than 10 unexcused absences in a half (1/2) credit class will receive a grade of F for the term regardless of the calculated grade. If time is not made up by the established deadline, the student will lose credit for the course.
  • A student will be considered absent from class if the student arrives or leaves class greater than or equal to 5 minutes. A parent/guardian may access the student’s record of attendance via SKYWARD.
  • Participating in school activities or attending to school business is considered in attendance. The activity is considered a field trip and the only type of exempt absence.
  • Suspended for disciplinary reasons is not to attend school and will be counted absent. Absences due to suspension will not be counted as unexcused.

Tardiness: Students are expected to arrive to class on time. Each teacher is responsible for defining a tardy to his/her class and reporting student tardiness. At Lake Brantley, tardiness results in the following discipline: 1st tardy: verbal warning from teacher, 2nd tardy: written referral for a 1-hour school detention and phone call home from teacher.  Subsequent tardies will result in a referral to the building office for further disciplinary sanctions.

Make Up Time

Students who exceed 10 unexcused absences in any one class in a semester will have their credit withheld. While their transcript will show the course, the grade, and that the course was attempted, it will also show that credit was not earned. In order for credit to be reinstated, students will have to make up the time that they missed at designated times during the school year. If students do not make up the time in classes where credit is withheld, then the student must retake the course.

For the 2017-18 school year, Lake Brantley will offer 2 opportunities each quarter to make-up time. Students will be able to make-up multiple absences on each of these opportunities. The dates and times will be published on our website, LBHS School App, and available through your school counselor by September 1, 2017. The process, policies and rules will be communicated to students by their school counselors. Students who have had credit denied because of excessive absences must work with their school counselor as soon as possible to ensure that they will not endanger their graduation status.
