The Parent Information Network (PIN) is a system that gives parents an idea of their child’s classroom performance by reporting both attendance and grades. PIN is by no means a perfect system. It requires both human and technical elements to work in concert for its true benefit to be realized. Here are a few facts about PIN.
Attendance:
PIN reports student attendance up to the previous school day. So, if it is Tuesday, August 24, 2010; PIN will reflect the attendance up to Monday, August 23, 2010.
Grades:
PIN is not a real-time view of your child’s grades. It is a past view of the teacher’s gradebook. Just what does this mean? Every Tuesday and Thursday @ 4:00 pm P.I.N captures exactly what is in the teacher’s gradebook. This process works over night and the results are displayed the next day (every Wednesday and Friday) at approximately 9:00 am. So, by the time you see what is displayed on PIN you are actually looking at the grades as of 4:00 pm the previous day. Please understand this is all a technical process. PIN does not have any control over whether the teacher has updated grades in the gradebook. PIN will display exactly what is in the gradebook at the time of capture.
Registration:
Parents, to have access to PIN, you must complete the online registration form found here. Please bring the form along with your driver’s license to the media center between 7:30 am – 2:20 pm on school days. Only Parents/Guardians that are on record within our student information system will be granted access. If in doubt about your status, please call 407-746-3450 before coming to the school. There will be a special registration held at 6 pm in the media center before open house.
Teacher Responsibility:
Teachers play a large role in the success of PIN. Teachers are required to update their computer gradebooks a minimum of once per week during the school year.
For PIN to operate successfully teachers must do the following:
1. Ensure grades are updated regularly
2. Ensure that date assigned and due dates are put into the gradebook
3. Ensure that the correct current average is selected and displayed in the gradebook
4. Take attendance daily
Teachers may elect to sign up for a PIN account to verify the results of the gradebook and PIN. Additionally, teachers may also elect to email progress reports to parents through the gradebook. Please be aware that your child’s teacher will need your email address. Open House might be a good opportunity to provide your email address to your child’s teacher.
School Tech Responsibility:
One role of the school’s Technology Facilitator (ETF) is to ensure that teachers have adequate gradebook support. The ETF will train and assist teachers with gradebooks and PIN as needed. The ETF will also post important information about PIN onto the school’s website. Additionally, the ETF will send a gentle nudge to teachers that have not updated gradebooks within the specified time frame.
School Administrator Responsibility:
Your child’s administrator will periodically review lists of gradebooks that have not been updated regularly.
